The development of the low bandwidth version of the ever popular social networking site Facebook came about as Facebook realized that over 100 million members worldwide are accessing the social networking sites through the power of their mobile phones.
The GSM Association, a huge industry body for mobile internet, has advised that nearly half the time used for internet browsing on mobile phones in the United Kingdom comes from people accessing their Facebook accounts. To put this into perspective, this equated to nearly thirty eight million hours of browsing Facebook in the UK from a mobile phone in December alone.
Facebook Zero will be free for members to use although it is believed a premium service may become available at a fee later on.
The announcement of the launch of Facebook Zero site occurred at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week.
