BBC has announced that it is about to launch its first iphone applications. The applications two main areas that are currently being worked on are the huge BBC iplayer service and a sports service.

The BBC iplayer is a great program that lets you watch any BBC program from the past week for free online and it seems iphone owners will be able to do this on the move and watch BBC programs anywhere!

The sports service is a big one that all football fans will want as it will allow iphone owners to watch games live on their phone and catch up on every goal scored in the World Cup competition this summer. For those that enjoy their Formula One do not despair as this application will be updated so you can watch Formula One later in the year.

Both the BBC iplayer application and sports service application are expected to be launched before the world cup and a new application to catch up on the latest headlines will be launched in April, something all iphone owners are really looking forward to.

Many media companies looking to get into the iphone application market are unhappy with the move by the BBC to create applications for the iphone as they say these free applications are going to muscle in on a saturated market and cause many to be unable to sell news applications.

The BBC has seen the capabilities of the Apple iphone and the huge new market it has created, these combined have made the BBC take note and decide this is a market of interest. It is believed that if the iphone is a huge success the BBC will look at building the same applications for the Google Android operating system and the RIM Blackberry system later in the year.
