Huge Chavez on Twitter

Saturday, 1 May 2010
The Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez who is extremely well known for his long and laborious speeches has decided to join the hugely popular micro blogging and networking site Twitter.

Although it is a far cry from his long winded television addresses this is seen as a huge step for Mr Chavez as he duly started twittering on April 27th at 9:43 pm.

Many Venezuelans will be used to Hugo Chaves going on for hours so it must come as a surprise (and probably a welcome one) that his tweets are simply two lines of information about what he is up to. Saying this messages are limited to one hundred and forty characters so this may be a big part of why Mr Chavez is not saying so much.

The first tweet Hugo Chavez made said “Hey how's it going? I appeared like I said I would: at midnight. I'm off to Brazil. And very happy to work for Venezuela. We will be victorious!!”

His second came two days later in the early hours of April 29th. Both tweets that Hugo Chavez has made are in Spanish and although they may be simple in text they are making a stir in the online and offline world because of his decision to join Twitter.

Interestingly Hugo Chavez is making his tweets via ÜberTwitter, a piece of software created initially to let Blackberry users tweet via their phone although the company is growing to make twittering possible from anywhere!

In the three days Hugo Chavez has been on Twitter he has already gained 148,095 followers (and counting) and has started following five people.
